Equiano is a private subsea cable system built by Google, running roughly 15,000km from Sesimbra, Portugal down the west coast of Africa to Melkbosstrand, South Africa, with branch landings in Togo, Nigeria, Saint Helena and Namibia.
The Equiano cable lands directly at OADC Lagos, with WIOCC, OADC's sister company, selected by Google as the official landing partner for Nigeria. Rather than landing at a generic cable station and requiring separate backhaul, Equiano terminates inside a Tier-III certified, carrier-neutral data centre, meaning organisations can connect to the cable's capacity without an additional hop.
Unlike many operators who purchase capacity on a shared system, WIOCC (OADC's sister company), owns a full fibre pair on Equiano and operates its own submarine line terminating equipment. In practice, this means WIOCC controls when and how much of that capacity gets lit, it can scale up bandwidth in response to real demand rather than waiting on a third party's upgrade cycle.
