Job Overview
We are seeking a highly competent Electrical Engineer with design, services experience/knowledge, and the ability to communicate effectively with others.
You will possess good commercial awareness, in addition to having robust foundational technical knowledge relevant to building services design and capable of incorporating those technologies into the data centre sector. It is essential that you understand the basics relating to the electrical and electronic services discipline within a data centre (mission-critical) environment. The position will ideally suit someone who is currently working in either consultancy, data centre operator, oil and gas or the sugar industry, with a focus on mission-critical systems and is prepared to work ‘hands-on.’
Job Objective
The Electrical Design Engineer will effectively deliver on large-sized projects and undertake to grow towards being an internal ‘expert’ with client-facing roles in the development, design and co-ordination of engineering projects and ensure the delivery of data centre and mission-critical projects within Africa
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Driving or supporting the design of the electrical building systems and ensuring the operational integrity thereof. You will be supported by the Director of Engineering, a professional engineer.
- Driving or supporting the development of appropriate building energy strategies and Strategies for buildings include communicating, having robust technical knowledge relevant to building services design, and being capable of incorporating those technologies into the data centre sector.
- Developing, encouraging or supporting sustainable building design on projects pushing the boundaries for data centre design.
- Developing concepts, appraising and recommending optimum design solutions.
- Driving or supporting the spatial and technical coordination of the building services and their integration into the building design.
- Produce engineering designs, calculations and specifications, using appropriate technical
- Supervising and coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other disciplines including in-house specialists.
- Undertake a client-facing role in the development, design and coordination of engineering
- Working across multiple projects with different design
- Technical ownership of electrical design and providing technical guidance and fostering productive working relationships with future junior members of the team.
- Attend Factory Acceptance Test (FATs) for key plant and
- Support the Engineering Team with activities relating to commissioning being up-to-speed for all commissioning levels (L1 – L6).
- Have the signoff authority for any electrical ancillaries implemented during the build
- Spend time on site during construction and commissioning to ensure successful project
- Support the Project Manager and Project Director in the commercial management of the
- Support the Group’s Operations Manager with acceptance of completed project/s.
- Review and approve the basis of design documents, capacity calculations and electrical
- Review and approve all commissioning and system testing strategies for each
- Participate in and lead bids for new opportunities including developing fee proposals and attending
- Maintaining a wide array of professional relationships in the data centre industry (clients/suppliers/competitors).
- Projects will include the design of new build data centres as well as improvement of existing
Minimum Qualifications
- Preferably 5-7 plus years experience working on Date Centre Build Projects, sugar and consultancy roles. Building services experience will be assessed as part of some examples including commercial A-grade offices, mission-critical financial services or other bluechip-type projects.
- Preferably 5 plus years’ relevant plant operation
- Preferably 5 plus years’ significant Data Centre commissioning and acceptance
- BEng/BSc degree in Electrical
- Have achieved Candidate or Professional Engineer status with an appropriate professional institution such as EIT or CIBSE.
- Preferably a professionally registered Certified Data Centre Design Professional or UTI Tier
- Demonstrable experience in critical standards and best practices, including a varied portfolio of medium to large-scale completed projects with experience across a range of project scales and building types.
- Preferably some experience in sustainable building design and in satisfying the regulatory and voluntary codes associated with sustainability and energy strategy.
- Experience in MV and LV electrical systems and related
- Preferably some experience in -48VDC
- Experience in protection devices and surge
- Experience in control
- Preferably some experience in in REVIT MEP for 3D modelling and rendering of building services, and BIM analysis including performance calculations and parametric modelling.
- Experience of discrimination studies and software and ability to learn and guide others in
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience in design guides published by Uptime Institute and TIA942 which govern data centre
